Redefining Pronunciation Goals

A common misconception among learners is that they must eliminate their accent to succeed. However, Cambridge Assessment English guidelines emphasize that at the B1 and B2 levels, the key focus is simply on being understood, or 'intelligibility' [16]. The CEFRL notes that public statements can be clearly intelligible even if accompanied by an unmistakably foreign accent [17].

Core Phonological Features to Target

🗣️

Word Stress

Putting the stress on the correct syllable in multi-syllable words, like 'photographer' vs 'photograph' [18].

🎵

Intonation

The way the voice rises and falls to convey mood or indicate new information [19].

🧩

Sentence Stress

Stressing the words in a sentence that carry the core message, aiding overall listener comprehension [20].

Teacher Tip

"Use physical gestures or finger counting to show the number of syllables and highlight where to place word stress. Additionally, vary choral drilling by asking specific groups (e.g., 'everyone wearing red') to repeat, keeping engagement high [21, 22]."
